This is one of my recent projects. I had an idea on how to make a gown, based off my previous experience of making a green medieval gowndoll-dress.html (blog post link here). I started with a (sort of) rectangle and went on from there. I added triangles to make the skirt wider and used a big piece of white fabric for the center split.
Right away as I began sewing, I ran into problems (as usual). The white piece in the front stuck out and looked funny, so I did some weird stitches on the front of the bodice to kind of close it up so it wouldn't bulge out (plus a few down lower, pulling the maroon skirt over the white a little more.) Naturally, I didn't think of how I would close the back, so I had to sew a big fat flap and snap it with buttons (one of which is visible from the front). I used a pre-existing pattern for the sleeves. They turned out ok, except one sticks up and one droops down. And one cuff is larger than the other. The maroon fabric was hard to work with because it shredded very easily. And now it's sort of falling apart. The dress looks ok from the outside, but on the inside it is a mess of stitches and shredding fabric. I also had to sew in a couple of extra pieces of fabric for an underskirt because the maroon is somewhat see through. This dress probably took over four hours to make and it has many, many mistakes. But, that's how I learn. All in all, I am pleased with how it turned out, at least visually. It's pretty close to the idea I was aiming for. |
